The water feature for Stephen DerMargosianEndorsements

Stephen DerMargosian, Architect

Joe has completed three very challenging projects for us on Elk Mountain in North Asheville. His work goes far beyond being simply beautiful. It is serene in its unruffled repose.

His first project was a long serpentine dry stack wall of Doggett Mountain granite complete with fish pond, stream, waterfall, steps and walkways. He did all the excavation, including putting in a small trail so he could bring the stone in. At its highest, it is almost seven feet tall. This job was completed in less than seven weeks. Joe was on-site every day, all day, rain-or-shine, with never an excuse about having to be somewhere else. You just can't ask for more than that. If you are considering hiring Joe don't delay, get on the list! We would be happy to show you the work. Just give us a call at 828.712.2414.

Joe is so dedicated to his craft. He is happy with his work when his client is happy. He is more than a stonemason – he’s an artist, creating art from stone and mortar. And he is a listener. He listened to my dreamy visions for a wall-enclosed patio – then he made my dream a reality. My wall-enclosed patio surpasses my expectations. I couldn’t be happier.

Joe Roberts truly is a stone weaver. He sees stone as you and I might see a tapestry; he tells moving, mythical, timeless stories of belonging in right balance on this Earth. He tells them in stone. His work shows us all how to dwell a little more authentically in the Carolina mountains.

(And his wife Katie, adds):

Dear Joe, Your swift and sure approach in building our "dragon wall" somehow seemed effortless ... I know that this is not the case for YOU but it sure was miraculous for US!

After checking out the rockscaping Joe had done for two sets of friends, I knew he was the talent to undertake the challenge of terracing two steep embankments at my new-house construction on a rural mountainside near Weaverville. The end result was an impressive series of four terraces, a connecting rather grand stone staircase (not just the "steps down" I'd originally asked for) and a long water feature with several mini-falls and a koi pond. Additionally (not in the original plan) Joe and his team created an adjoining flagstone patio, engineered a French drain system for my oriental-style "courtyard" and paved the walkways through this with a combination of flagstone and gravel. Joe and his assistants were punctual and fast, and my partner and I couldn't be happier with the results of their high craftsmanship "weaving" stone!

I could bear to part with my house before I could part with my wall! It goes from bench to niche to gorgeous stairs to a garden. Joe and Matt did it in just a few weeks with attention to every detail. I could never have imagined it and now can't imagine ever being without it!

Joe and Lenore Baum

Joe Roberts did extensive stone work on our natural home and gardens. Each time that he crafted a stone wall, we would think of another place we wanted to see his artistry. Joe is very collaborative. He allowed us to co-create the shapes and forms of the stonework to fit in with our own sense of design. It was a delight to have his calm, steady energy during construction in the midst of the chaotic building process. We are blessed to have found him.
